What is Management Security?

The entire design of your controls is management security. These provide the guidance, rules, and processes for implementing a security environment, and are sometimes referred to as administrative controls.

 

What is Operational Security?

The effectiveness of your controls is operational security. Access controls, authentication, and securities applied to networks, systems, and applications are examples of technical controls.

 

What is Physical Security?

Physical security refers to safeguarding personnel, data, hardware, and other assets against physical threats that could injure, damage, or disrupt company operations, as well as compromise the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of systems and/or data.

An effective security program includes controls from each area.  An organisation’s controls must be selected based on its determination of inherent risk and how the organisation chooses to address each of those risks. 

Security controls from those areas could also address a selected risk.  Physical security controls may then be put in place to limit access to a particular building or server room; operational security controls may be used to detect server logins that are not authorised and lastly, management security controls will give specifics as to who has permission to access the information or company's data. 

Because each organisation's risk is distinct, the controls implemented to handle it will be different as well.
