Trusted Security Tips for Travelling Away from Home

How to Keep Yourself Safe and Prevent Physical or Identity Theft While Traveling

As a service to our communities, Supreme Security Services is always happy to offer free advice on security matters.

Today, we would like to talk about ways that you can keep yourself safe whilst you are travelling away from home.

We may have vivid imaginations but leaving the comforts of our home to travel to a distant country or even a city that is not familiar to us is unquestionably frightening. You are not alone if you feel insecure and like a target for professional scammers and crooks that prey on unsuspecting travellers. We are right with you and our professional team at Supreme Security Services is readily available to give you some advice on how to keep safe before, during and after your travels.

BEFORE YOU GO:

  • If at all possible, avoid taking with you your professional or personal electronics on international journeys. Remove or encrypt any confidential data if you do.
  • Consider using temporary equipment for overseas travel, such as an affordable laptop and a prepaid mobile phone acquired particularly for travel.
  • If your mobile device is lost or stolen, install a device finder or manager. Check that it has remote wipe capabilities and that you understand how to use it.
  • Make sure any device with an operating system and software is fully updated.
  • Back up your WhatsApp chats in case your device is stolen, then you can easily retrieve the chats on another device.
  • Last but not least, be sure to remember to sit down with one of Supreme Security Services executives to discuss security needs for your property before you depart.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE:

  • Ensure that you, your gadgets, and any identifying documents are physically secure (especially your passport).
  • Use an ATM only if you have no other choice; otherwise, work with a bank teller or use a Debit/Visa card.
  • Although it is difficult to resist sharing images or alerting friends and family about your travels, it is better to wait until you return home before posting about your vacation on social media.
  • Never use public computers, hotel business centres  or internet cafĂ© computers because they may be infected with keyloggers and viruses. Do not log in to email or any sensitive accounts if you are using another traveller’s, colleague's, or friend's device.
  • Use caution when connecting to public wireless networks or Wi-Fi hotspots; they aren't secure, and anyone could see what you're doing on your computer or mobile device while you're connected.
  • During your trips, keep your devices with you at all times. They will not be safe in your hotel room or in a hotel safe.

WHEN YOU RETURN

  • First things first, when you return home be sure to do an all-around check that everything is in order at your premises.  If you would have used the services of Supreme Security Services, you can be assured that your property remained safe and secure from thieves and vandalism.
  • Change any and all passwords you may have used while you were travelling.
  • Run full antivirus scans on your devices.

  • If you used a credit card while travelling, check your monthly statements for any discrepancies for at least one year after you return.
  • If you downloaded any apps specifically for your trip and no longer need them, be sure to delete those apps and the associated data.
  • And finally, post all of your photos on social media and enjoy reliving the experience!
